Webcams have developed in recent years, thanks to the superior image resolutions now found in smartphones and integrated laptop versions (which move away from older VGA versions). With Microsoft and Logitech being among the market leaders, a £100+ version will give you the very best image quality - namely 30 FPS shooting, automatic focus adjustment, 1920 x 1080 true HD resolution and built in stereo microphones. The vast majority of webcams, however, fall into the £30-£55 price range and still offer all the benefits of HD images and good quality CMOS sensors.
Among our favourites are Microsoft's Lifecam Studio - which offers excellent natural colour balance and built-in TrueColor / automatic light correction. With a 1080p-capable sensor, the Lifecam only offers 720p video recording. Nonetheless it offers a good balance between price and features, working particularly well in less-than-optimal surroundings.
Next up is Logitech's C930e - a member of the same family as it's more expensive sibling the Logitech C920-C. What we like about the C930e is its stylish looks, matching a black surround to a brushed aluminium bezel. With full 1080p HD and offering 30 FPS for high-quality conference calls, it features a Carl Zeiss lens and privacy shutter for added security. Mountable on a tripod, LCD screen, table top or notebook, it also offers pan, tilt, and zoom controls, together with video and photo capture.
For budget conscious users, best value of all is the HP-Webcam-HD-4310 - a sub £35 Webcam with 1920 x 1080 (1080p HD) resolution at 30FPS. With 360° pan and 30° tilt positioning, this webcam is a stylish addition to any laptop set-up, also offering certified compatibility wth Microsoft Lync.
