USB hubs increase the number of available USB ports on a laptop, desktop PC or tablet, removing the need to constantly swap devices by multiplying your USB connectivity options. As a way to conveniently connect external peripherals, the hub plugs into a host USB port on the computer (meaning that on a ten-port hub, there will be a net gain of nine USB ports). At Misco we stock USB hubs from leading brands such as Startech, Lindy & Videk.
For power, many larger USB hubs rely upon an external power source - while bus-powered hubs (which draw power from the host device) are preferable for increased portability. In the latter case, however, stability may be sacrificed when using them with high power-consumption devices, such as external hard drives. Therefore, when buying, it's important to check system requirements for the hub, its power consumption, transfer rates (i.e. USB 3.0 hubs offer transfer rates typically up to 5Gbps) and the length of the attaching cable (i.e. 2ft USB 3.0 cable).
Some models also feature one (or more) USB ports with increased amperage (typically 2.1 amps instead of 0.9amps) allowing the hub to charge devices such as iPads and other similarly-sized tablets.
